About the Breed

*We have had Australian Shepherds and cowdogs for many years and below is information about the breed we have discovered from having these incredible dogs*

Three things come to mind for us when we think of our Australian Shepherds: Energy, Brains, and Loyalty.

Energy: Australian Shepherds are very high energy dogs! They require daily exercise whether that be walks, playing fetch, or a yard that is safe for them to run freely. When deciding if the Aussie is right for you, make sure you have a way to expel their energy. If you want a dog that is content laying around all day not requiring much exercise, we would not suggest this dog for you. Running, fetching, swimming, daily walks is what these dogs require and love.

Brains: So smart! Sometimes too smart. Our dogs have been easy to train. Herding is an instinct in this breed. If getting an Aussie, make sure to train them NOT to chase after vehicles as they will sometimes do (herding instinct). Also when introduced to new things (loud noises, new people, bicycles, new animals, etc.), Aussies will tend to either react aggressively or become timid and run and hide. Make sure to introduce new sights and sounds slowly and train them to be cautious but in a positive way. We have had our puppies go to homes where they are service/therapy dogs.

Loyalty: Expect to get a great companion when you get an Australian Shepherd! Our dogs rarely leave our side and always keep their eye on where we are. They are great protectors, snugglers, and passengers in the vehicle (they absolutely love truck rides!). They become great family dogs as well. When surrounded with children starting at a young age, they will love and protect them.
